The challenge
Waste collection ran to a fixed route schedule regardless of whether a bin was full or empty. Overflowing bins in high-footfall areas were reported by residents rather than detected, so response was reactive and the corporation had no data to show where capacity genuinely needed increasing.
What we built
We built a monitoring platform fed by sensors on bins across the city. Fill levels stream into a dashboard with map and list views, and threshold breaches raise alerts routed to the responsible ward staff over WhatsApp using the KWIC API — chosen because field staff already live in WhatsApp and would not reliably adopt a new app. Role-based access separates ward, zone and corporation-level views, and the reporting module produces the periodic summaries the corporation needs. The platform integrates with the city Integrated Command and Control Centre.
What changed
Collection can be prioritised by actual fill level rather than route order, and the corporation has a historical record of which locations fill fastest, which supports capacity planning rather than guesswork.
